Please join us for a presentation on heparin and low molecular weight heparins - safety and efficacy concerns in anticipation of the future availability of "follow-on" or biosimilar heparin related anticoagulants. The webinar will include background chemical and biochemical information on heparin and its mode(s) of action, animal studies that indicate differences between various low molecular weight heparins and the challenges to ensuring safety that were made tragically clear by the recent adulteration of heparin by the semi-synthetic "heparin-like" over-sulfated chondroitin sulfate. Our goal is to provide a basis for understanding the challenges presented by biosimilar low molecular weight heparins and their use as "putatively" interchangeable anticoagulants and antithrombotics.
The webinar will be led by Jeanine M. Walenga, Ph.D. and Craig M. Jackson, Ph.D. Dr. Walenga is Professor of Thoracic-Cardiovascular Surgery and Pathology, Loyola University, Chicago. She serves on the editorial boards of Clinical and Applied Thrombosis/Hemostasis, Haemostasis and Seminars in Thrombosis and Hemostasis. Dr. Jackson, now retired, was previously Professor of Biological Chemistry and Associate Professor, Internal Medicine, Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, and has been active in the in vitro diagnostics industry, particularly the Joint Committee for Traceability in Laboratory Medicine. He is currently a member of the editorial boards of the Thrombosis Journal, Accreditation and Quality Assurance and IVD Technology (a trade journal). Drs. Walenga and Jackson are members of the Ad Hoc Advisory Committee on Heparin of the United States Pharmacopeia (USP).
