North American Thrombosis Summit 2009

The 2009 North American Thrombosis Summit was held Saturday, September 26, 2009, at the Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel in Boston, Massachusetts. This event targeted physicians, nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, hospitalists, and hospital administrators interested in thrombosis treatment and prevention. The intensive 1-day symposium included talks from 15 renowned leaders in the field of thrombosis including; physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and basic researchers.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

The Thrombosis Summit 2009 seeks to provide physicians with an understanding of the complexities of thrombosis—cardiac, neurological, and venous. The complexity arises not only with each area of thrombosis, but also with regard to the varying disciplines and approaches to advancing the field, including translational research, clinical research, prevention, education, public policy, and advocacy. At the course, multidisciplinary attendees will learn together and share the common goal of promoting strategies to prevent thrombosis and to manage it optimally when it occurs.

Upon completion of this program, participants should be able to:

Recognize and evaluate the options of new therapeutic approaches for thrombosis prophylaxis; Summarize key findings from the recent thrombosis-related JUPITER trial, such as the prevention of cardiovascular disease among healthy people with normal low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels but an elevated level of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP); Identify and discuss thrombosis risk factors for adults, adolescents, and children, including cancer and atrial fibrillation; Discuss the long-term effect of thrombosis, including pulmonary hypertension, and post thrombotic syndrome; Identify and apply effective and safe approaches to anticoagulation bridging; Identify mechanisms to decrease thrombosis during hospitalization; Review thrombosis-related disease states in terms of ischemic stroke and acute coronary syndrome; Identify strategies to prevent atherothrombosis caused by plaque rupture;
Discuss the role of volunteers in raising public awareness about thrombosis and cardiovascular disease.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

Our mission is to optimize patient care. To this end, our program is designed to provide the most up-to-date information and strategies community physicians, hospital-based physicians, nurses, legislators, government employees who work in the area of health policy and health education, patients, and families of patients.
